- Listed equity held over 12 months is long-term: 12.5% tax on gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year. Under 12 months: 20%.
- Property, gold and other assets held over 24 months are long-term at 12.5% without indexation. Short-term gains are added to your income.
Formula
Tax = (Sale price − Purchase price − Expenses − Exemption) × Rate + 4% cess
Worked example
Equity bought for ₹5 lakh, sold for ₹8 lakh after 18 months: gain ₹3 lakh, exempt ₹1.25 lakh, tax 12.5% on ₹1.75 lakh = ₹21,875 + cess = ₹22,750.
